Clarence Gilyard’s Family And Education
Clarence Gilyard was the son of Barbara and Clarence Gilyard Sr. who was an Air Force officer. Gilyard was the second child of 6 children. His family was basically from New Orleans, Louisiana, but Gilyard was raised on Air Force bases in Hawaii, Texas, and Florida.
Gilyard was married twice and had 6 children. His first marriage was with Catherine Dutko and it ended in divorce. He later married his second wife whose name was Elena in 2001. He attended California State University.
Clarence Gilyard Professional Career And Films
In 1979, Gilyard shifted to Los Angeles to become an actor. Among other work, a role in the play Bleacher Bums made him what one magazine called “the first black actor to play a cheerleader”, before Clarence segued in the television roles. As being a character actor, Gilyard has made guest appearances on the TV shows such as the Different Strokes, The Facts of Life, 227, Simon and Simon, and Riptide.
From 1982 to 1983, Gilyard got cast in the final season of the NBC TV series CHiPs as Officer Benjamin Webster opposite Erik Estrada. Clarence co-starred with Jim Carrey in the 1984 NBC sitcom The Duck Factory. Clarence appeared in a commercial ad of McDonald’s in 1987.
Clarence was also a military man in the 1986 film The Karate Kid Part II. Clarence appeared in the 1988 action movie Die Hard as Theo who is a criminal computer expert. Clarence also appeared as the Reverend Bruce Barnes Left Behind: The Movie and its sequel, Left Behind II: Tribulation Force.
In 2012, Gilyard started appearing onscreen again mostly in independent projects. In 2014, he got featured in the religious movie A Matter of Faith. He was an associate professor in the College of Fine Arts in the Department of Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
