Iga Swiatek was seen by BBC cameras at Wimbledon engaging in a playful act as she quietly packed extra towels into her bag after her match. Following her handshake with the Russian opponent and the umpire, and after addressing the crowd, she began gathering as many towels as she could. With a light smile, she placed a finger over her lips, gesturing to keep it a secret. This was not the first time she had been seen collecting towels for her friends and family.

Wimbledon’s iconic green and purple towels, manufactured in India, continue to hold a special place among tennis players during the Championships. Hundreds go missing within the first few days of the tournament. Despite each towel costing around £40, many players treat them as personal souvenirs. This tradition includes well-known names such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Iga Swiatek.

The Championships 2025 520 GSM Classic Cotton Bath Towel 70x133cm is priced at $‌67.00 and has a 30 day return period.

The towels are produced by Christy, a company based in Stockport that was acquired by Welspun India in 2006. Since the acquisition, the towels have been manufactured at Welspun’s plant in Vapi, Gujarat. Christy has supplied towels to Wimbledon since 1987. Every year, the company creates two designs: the traditional green and purple version and a seasonal edition. In 2025, the seasonal towels feature shades of aqua and sky blue.

Players use the towels during matches to manage sweat and moisture. Over time, the towels have become some of the most sought-after items on the court. According to The Sunday Times, Wimbledon’s court services team reported that nearly 500 towels went missing each day during the early stages of the 2025 tournament. Out of 2,799 towels distributed in the first week, only 828 were returned to staff.

Iga Swiatek mentioned with a smile that she often takes extra towels home for her family and friends. She said that after every Grand Slam, she receives at least ten requests for towels. She joked that if her career continues for another 15 years, she might need a special room to store her collection.

Roger Federer once shared that his collection of Wimbledon towels had grown significantly over the years and described them as thoughtful gifts. Novak Djokovic said that he keeps a separate suitcase just for towels, explaining that they bring happiness to those close to him. These towels, made in Gujarat, continue to leave their mark not only on the courts but also in players’ homes and memories.
