Christian Atsu, a former winger for Chelsea and Newcastle, was caught in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey, and despite erroneous reports to the contrary, he is still missing and presumed dead.
Search and rescue crews in Turkey are still trying to reach Christian Atsu, who is feared to be buried under the wreckage from the recent earthquake.

The 31-year-old, who formerly played for Chelsea and now plays for Newcastle, was caught in Monday’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake. An exaggerated story circulated that Christian Atsu had been rescued and hospitalised for breathing problems and a right foot injury. Kerim Alici, one of Atsu’s teammates, denied the winger had been located in an Instagram post.

After Hatayspor manager Mustafa zat revealed that both Atsu and the club’s sporting director Taner Savut were still buried under the debris, Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu tweeted that the pair were still missing. Christian Atsu’s current club, Hatayspor, is based in the Turkish city of Hatay, which was one of the epicentres of the attack.
Two other footballers are recused
Onur Ergun and Burak Oksuz were two of the other football players that were rescued after the initial incident. Atsu’s teammates Ruben Ribeiro and Ze Luis escaped unharmed, and Kerim Alici dug himself out of the wreckage.
Following his departure from Porto in 2013, Atsu joined Chelsea, where he spent time as a young player before going on to other Premier League clubs like Everton and Bournemouth before arriving at St. James’ Park. After signing with Hatayspor over the summer, Christian Atsu scored his first goal for the team on Sunday night, just hours before the natural disaster that has wreaked havoc across Turkey.

Over 12,000 people in Turkey and Syria may have been hurt, and at least 2,800 people have reportedly died as a result of the tragedy. Only hours after the initial earthquake, a much larger aftershock of magnitude 7.5 struck the south of Turkey. Once again, it appears to have been felt in Syria and also in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Olympic champion wrestler Taha Akgul is among the athletes who have suffered because of the earthquake, and he has issued a frantic call for “immediate help” on his social media account.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey claimed at a news conference that the quake was the “largest disaster” in his country since another severe quake in 1939.
