Following Chris Kamara’s revelation about developing speech disorder on Sky Sports show ‘Soccer Saturday’ this weekend, fans of the former footballer turned sports presenter has expressed concern for his health.

He was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism previously, also known as Underactive Thyroid disease, in June last year

Kamara, 64, took to Twitter to answer fans’ concerns about his health, stating that his slurred speech is the result of a neurological ailment called apraxia. It is a motor speech disorder that impairs the brain networks involved in speech production.

He wrote,

Just wanted to let a few of you know who tweeted me today that I am ok ish. Alongside my Thyroid problem I have developed Apraxia of Speech & have been working to get my speech back to normal.

He added,

Some days it can be a little slow and some days it’s normal. Hopefully I can beat this!

Who is Chris Kamara?

Christopher “Kammy” Kamara was born on Christmas Day that is December 25 in 1957 in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire to a Sierra Leonean father, Alimamy Kindo “Albert” Kamara.

He is a broadcaster and football commentator for Sky Sports and is a former professional football player and manager from England. He was recognised as a tough-tackling midfielder during his playing career.

He married Anne Kamara in 1982. The couple’s two kids are Ben and Jack.

His career

At the age of 16, his father, a veteran naval mariner, persuaded him to join the Royal Navy.

At the age of 18, he began his professional soccer career with Portsmouth. In 2012, he made a return at the age of 55, appearing in two games for Welshpool Town. He and Jamie Redknapp, another soccer star, both became Sky Sports analysts after retirement.

Kamara received the ‘Above & Beyond in Memory of Sir Bill Cotton award’ in December 2011 for his efforts to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

In 2004, Kamara was named to the Show Racism at the Red Card Hall of Fame. He was subjected to years of racial harassment as a footballer.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a speech sound ailment also known as acquired apraxia of speech or verbal apraxia. A person with AOS has difficulty saying what he or she wants to communicate in a clear and consistent manner.

AOS is a neurological condition that impairs the brain circuits that plan the sequence of motions required to produce speech. The brain understands what it wants to say, but it is unable to arrange and sequence the necessary speech sound actions.
