Chris Beard, who was previously the head coach at Texas, was terminated from his position in January amidst accusations of domestic violence against his wife. However, the charges against him were eventually dropped, paving the way for his return to coaching.

Beard has a record of 171-73 as a coach. In 2019, he led Texas Tech to the title game of the NCAA Tournament. Also last season, the team he is taking over went 12-21.

Keith Carter, the athletic director at Ole Miss, said in a news release that they looked into Beard before hiring him and found that he was “the right person to lead our team to greatness.”

“At each stop in his career, Coach Beard has proven to be a program builder and a dynamic leader whose teams exhibit relentless effort,” Carter said.

“He is a tireless recruiter and develops talent to reach their greatest potential. He has coached at multiple levels of college basketball and has competed for championships at every school. Simply put, Coach Chris Beard is a winner, and Ole Miss Basketball’s best years are ahead of us under his leadership.”

Chris Beard led Texas Tech to a record of 112-55 in his five years as head coach before he was hired by his old school, Texas. Beard had a 29-13 record in parts of two seasons at Texas. Before Beard was suspended, the Longhorns were 7-1 this season.

The Longhorns finished the season with a record of 26-8 and are the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. On Thursday, they will play Colgate in the Midwest Region. Ole Miss ended the season with a 12-21 record and a 3-15 record in SEC play.

While his salary and contract at Ole Miss aren’t known, his actual total compensation from the school for his 2022-23 contract year, beginning April 1, 2022, was $3,488,178, according to information provided by Texas. His net worth is at $10 million.

As for Beard, the former Longhorns coach owns a career record of 237-98 as a college head coach and before arriving at Texas in 2021, he spent five seasons at Texas Tech (2016-21) and one year at Little Rock (2015-16) and led the Red Raiders to the Final Four and a spot in the national title game in 2019.

He was born in Marietta, Georgia, on October 18, 1972, and grew up in the small Texas town of Irving. Beard went to college at the University of Texas at Austin. Where he studied kinesiology and played basketball with other students.

After college, Beard worked at Texas Tech as a graduate assistant for the legendary coach Bob Knight. He went on to coach at Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Seminole State, McMurry, and Little Rock before becoming the head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock in 2015. Also in his only season with the Little Rock Trojans, Beard led them to a 30-5 record and an upset win over Purdue in the NCAA Tournament.
