M.S. Dhoni, a former captain of India’s cricket team, will not be present at the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad’s concluding ceremony on Tuesday at Chennai’s Nehru Indoor Stadium.

The event is set to start at 6:00PM on Tuesday, after the champions are crowned across all events. In the presence of Siva V. Meyyanathan, the State Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, will preside over the event.

Chess Olympiad 2022 Closing Ceremony Agenda
The 44th Chess Olympiad, hosted by India kicked-off on July 28 and will culminate on August 10, 2022, is put on by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE). The prestigious tournament features open and women’s tournaments as well as many other chess-related activities. With this Olympiad, India got the first opportunity to host a Chess Olympiad.
The event was originally slated to coincide with the Chess World Cup 2019 in Khanty-Mansiysk, but it was changed to Moscow and set for the week of August 5–17, 2020. It was eventually moved to Chennai as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after being delayed due to mounting COVID-19 pandemic concerns.
There were 1,736 participants in all, with 937 in the Open competition and 800 in the Women’s competition. In the Open segment, there were 188 teams registered from 186 countries, and in the Women’s competition, there were 162 teams registered from 160 countries. The tournament set records for team participation in both sections. The convention center at the Four Points by Sheraton served as the primary location for the Chess Olympiad, while the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will host the closing ceremony. International Arbiter Laurent Freyd from France is serving as the competition’s Chief Arbiter.
Guests & Procedure of Closing Ceremony at Chess Olympiad 2022
The Greater Chennai Traffic Police has announced several traffic diversions ahead of the 44th Chess Olympiad’s concluding event, which began on July 28 and was taking place in the city. On Tuesday, August 9, the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium will host the farewell ceremony. Chess players, Union ministers, state ministers, and chief minister M.K. Stalin will all be in attendance.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a former captain of India, was to be the chief guest at the 44th Chess Olympiad’s concluding ceremony on Tuesday in Chennai but won’t attend due to logistic issues. Dhoni first became associated with Chennai in 2008 when he was named captain of the Chennai Super Kings, who have since won the IPL four times.
The FIDE president, Arkady Dvorkovih, and vice president, GM Viswanathan Anand, will attend the closing ceremony and be the chief guest. Further, the event will also feature H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, head of the Asian Chess Federation, Bharat Singh Chauhan, secretary of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), and Sanjay Kapoor.

The Chess Olympiad is broadcast on the Doordarshan TV network in India. Grandmasters Peter Leko and Peter Svidler will provide commentary for the tournament on Chess24, while Chess.com will stream the match on their ChessTV, Twitch, and YouTube feeds.
