The upcoming 45th edition of the tournament is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, starting from September 10 till 23.

Swiss Format and parings system explained

The upcoming 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 will follow the Swiss format, which is currently the most prominent way of conducting a chess tournament. In the Swiss format, all the players/teams donโ€™t face eliminations over the course of the competition. Instead, during the opening round of the competition, the teams/players with a higher rating are manually paired alongside lower-rated teams/players.

Following the end of this round, the pairings are then based on the performance in the initial round. Each of the teams/players who win get matched with other winners, while the losers will face the losers. The organizers will make an effective effort to avoid colour repetition. Following the is format, the participant with most points eventually wins the tournament. Ever since 2008, the organizers of the FIDE Chess Olympiad determine a teamโ€™s ranking based on match points instead of board points. Teams that win a match receive 1 point, while teams that draw receive 0.5 points each. In the event of a loss, a team receives 0 points.
