2022 Chess.com Global Championship Nihal Sarin vs Wesley So Final Results, Scores, & Match Summary
On Monday, Wesley So needed just two games to secure overall 4.5-1.5 victory against Nihal Sarin, win the Chess.com Global Championship title, and $200,000 in prize money. Nihal Sarin, an 18-year-old Indian prodigy, won $100,000, by far the largest prize of his career to date, but despite having various opportunities against the three-time US Champion in the penultimate game, he was unable to score any blows. On his path to the Chess.com Global Championship final, Nihal Sarin defeated Rauf Mamedov, Vladimir Kramnik, Ding Liren, Sam Sevian, and Anish Giri. Wesley So, however, was the final great name he was unable to defeat.
Wesley understood that to win the match, he would need three draws, or one win plus one draw, as the score was 3-1 in his favor going into the second day of the championship match. With win his sight, So played cautiously and allowed Nihal to corner him in first match of Sunday before settling for draw. However, Nihal’s anxious play allowed So to dominate sixth game and seal victory by score of 4.5-1.5. Next for So will be Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s final leg, where he will play against some of the elite GMs like Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri.
