Check out how the formal Cheltenham Festival 2023 dress code has changed and what you may and cannot wear to the races

Ellie Pitt of ITV News says that the Jockey Club is easing up on the dress restriction for events at all of its racetracks, including the Derby and the Cheltenham Festival.

Many people believe that dressing in your Sunday best is necessary for a day at the races.

Most fans will try to comply with the formal attire requirements set forth by England’s 15 racetracks, whether it be a dress and heels with a fascinator or a three-piece suit.

The Jockey Club, a coalition of companies and organisations in charge of overseeing British horse racing, has decided to do away with the formal dress requirement, so dressing up for the races may soon be a thing of the past.

There is “no clothing code,” yet there are still some fashion gaffes that will prevent spectators from entering the race grounds.

Here is what they can’t wear:

Some costumes will receive a “no” from staff, despite The Jockey Club’s declaration that it wants visitors to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable.

  • Although people are permitted to dress up in proper attire, no unpleasant or offensive fancy dress is permitted.
  • Absolutely no clothes that are offensive
  • There are worries that replica sports uniforms like football uniforms will annoy competing teams.

The choice of clothing for spectators should be made with common sense.

What happens if you wear anything that’s restricted or banned?

The offending or prohibited attire will prevent the person or group from entering the racecourse.

Does the no dress code policy have any exceptions?

Yes, there is still a location at the races where attendees must arrive in formal clothes.

Derby Day, the renowned yearly race that was first run in 1780, will require those in the Queen Elizabeth II Stand at Epsom Downs to dress in Morning Dress.

Wearing a morning coat, waistcoat, and formal pants or a dress is required.

On Derby Day, visitors are welcome at the racecourse in all other areas and are urged to wear whatever they feel most comfortable with.

What about Ladies Day?

ITV News received a statement from The Jockey Club saying that they hoped people would continue to glam up for Ladies Day at Epsom Racecourse.

The style awards ceremony, during which the best-dressed spectator is crowned, will still take place.
