Wolves stunned Chelsea with a hat-trick from Matheus Cunha, moving the Blues to the bottom half of the Premier League standings. After Moises Caicedo’s defence-splitting pass, Cole Palmer easily tapped past Jose Sa to give Mauricio Pochettino’s team the lead in the 19th minute. Less than three minutes later, though, Cunha’s attempt took a big deflection from Thiago Silva and caught Djordje Petrovic off guard, giving the Wolves a point. Just before halftime, Pedro Neto’s cutback was met by Rayan Ait-Nouri, who deflected the ball off Axel Disasi to complete the turnaround.
The home crowd erupted in jeers as the halftime whistle went off, but Chelsea was unable to mount a comeback of their own and instead trailed two goals when the lightning-fast Neto beat Silva and found Cunha for his second. After being hauled down by Malo Gusto, the Brazilian then scored his hat-trick from the penalty spot. With eight minutes left, he sent Petrovic the wrong way to ensure that the outcome was certain, but Silva headed in a late consolation. After 23 games, Wolves’ well-earned victory lifted Gary O’Neil’s team to 10th place, one point and one position ahead of Chelsea.
Will Chelsea fire Pochettino?
As far as TSG is aware, Chelsea has no plans to fire Pochettino just yet. The Blues’ decision-makers are still in favour of Pochettino, and their position has not altered in any way. However, the bookmaker Gambling.com has done the math and compiled a list of top contenders to take over for the Argentine if he is released from his responsibilities.
With odds of 7/4, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is presently the favourite to take over. Soon after, former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho—who is as short as 2/1 to return for a third stint at a team where he had a great deal of success—follows him. Given that Girona is presently leading La Liga and thwarting advances from formidable opponents Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid this season, manager Michel Sanchez’s name is also getting attention. His odds of winning at Stamford Bridge are 3/1.
Odds for Chelsea’s next manager
Roberto De Zerbi 7/4
Jose Mourinho 2/1
Michel Sanchez 3/1
Xabi Alonso 9/2
Thomas Frank 6/1
Zinedine Zidane 8/1
Ruben Amorim 10/1
Simone Inzaghi 12/1
