Potential candidates for the post of Sporting director at the Chelsea Football Club after Christoph Freund rejects to join the Blues
Todd Boehly is the current sporting director of Chelsea on an interim basis. The club has still not replaced its former club director Marina Granovskaia who quit the club this summer. Todd Boehly was very busy during the summer transfer window which saw the arrival of eight new signings at the Stamford Bridge.
The American have done brilliant work in the summer transfer window, however, there is one loophole that is not yet filled at Stamford Bridge. Earlier this month Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel as manager and now Todd Boehly and the club are looking to appoint the new sporting director at Stamford Bridge.

Todd Boehly and the club were both optimistic about Christoph Freund’s appointment as the club’s new Sporting director. However, the CEO of RB Salzburg has confirmed that they are unwilling to let Freund go. Speaking to Sky Sports Austria, Freund commented on the interest in joining Chelsea:
It is a great club undergoing transition. I can’t say exactly what will happen in the next few weeks and months, in football, you can’t exclude anything, but I’m the sporting director of Salzburg and I love it.”
As of now, Todd Boehly will remain the interim director of the club and will dig further to find alternate options.
Potential candidates for the role of Sporting Director at Chelsea Football Club
Having missed RB Salzburg’s Christoph Freund, Todd Boehly now wants to talk to Bayer Leverkusen’s Tim Steidten about the role of Sporting director at Stamford Bridge.
Steidten has joined Leverkusen as a squad planner since 2019. When it comes to finding players, Steidten places an important emphasis on data to track players. The club has also been associated with Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, Athletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta and former Barcelonan and PSG defender Maxwell for the role. Whoever appoints Chelsea’s new Sporting director in the future, will need to work with Potters recruiting analyst Kyle Macaulay.
