According to state police, Regan Gibbs, a former University of Kansas soccer player, was slain by her husband. She was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.

Regan Gibbs, 25, was discovered seriously injured in her residence in Lawrence, Kansas, on May 16. According to officials, the deceased’s spouse, Chad Joseph Marek, dialed 911 himself. He was apprehended near the purported crime site.

Marek contacted 911 to report that he had killed Gibbs because “God commanded him to.” When first responders came, they discovered Gibbs dead on the scene. Domestic abuse is being investigated as a “contributing factor” in Gibbs’ death, according to Lawrence police.

From 2015 until 2018, Gibbs was a goalie for the Kansas Jayhawks, helping the team achieve two NCAA tournament appearances.

“Our soccer program is devastated to learn of Regan’s untimely death,” said coach Mark Francis. “She was an incredible teammate and young woman who had a huge impact on so many people throughout her time at Kansas.”

On May 24, Marek will appear in court.

Gibbs, a Washington native, was the Kansas Jayhawks’ goalkeeper from 2015 until 2018. During her tenure at Kansas, she was a member of two NCAA tournament teams, according to the university’s athletics department website. Gibbs married Marek in November 2021, according to her Facebook page.

Marek was arrested immediately and is being jailed on a $1 million bail. He has a history of aggression, interfering with medical emergency professionals, and interfering with law enforcement. According to Journal-World, Marek previously protested online about COVID-19 vaccines and “the LGBTQ agenda.”
