Prediction
To set up a championship match at the Poland Open, here on Saturday, Caroline Garcia and Ana Bogdan defeated Jasmine Paolini and Kateryna Baindl in straight sets in the semifinals.
Jasmine Paolini, the No. 10 seed from Italy, was easily defeated by No. 5 seed Garcia of France 6-1, 6-2 to go to her 12th singles final overall. Garcia improved to 3-0 against Paolini in just 65 minutes.
Garcia continued her summer of outstanding form by following up her dramatic upset of World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the previous round. She has now prevailed in 17 of her previous 20 games, which includes an attempt at the Bad Homburg crown and a run to Wimbledon’s Round of 16.
Under a lingering drizzle
Garcia, the 45th-ranked player in the world, defeated Paolini, the 58th-ranked player, by earning 80% of her first-service points and 60% of her first-return points in a match that was marred by persistent precipitation that grew noticeably heavier as time ran out.
Garcia, a former World No. 4, also hit six aces on the day. Elena Rybakina, the current Wimbledon champion, has lost her title to Garcia, who now leads the season with 236 aces.
Garcia had triple match points at 6-1, 5-1, and looked poised to end the game quickly. But Paolini overcame a 40-point deficit in the game to extend play as the rain fell harder. Garcia did, however, score on her sixth match point in the ensuing game to secure the victory.
Garcia as she next faces Bogdan in the final has an 8-3 record in her previous singles finals. In their sole previous encounter, which took place in the Wimbledon second round five years ago, Garcia triumphed over Bogdan.
This week, Bogdan of Romania achieved a career-best result by winning her maiden Hologic WTA Tour singles match. Bogdan accomplished that accomplishment by defeating Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl, a lucky loser, 7-5, 7-5 in the first semifinal on Saturday.
108 in the world Bogdan has not dropped a set in the competition despite being pushed above two hours by Baindl for the first time this week. In her fifth attempt, Bogdan won precisely two-thirds of the points off of Baindl’s second service to win a tour-level semifinal for the first time.
A dramatic final is expected but Caroline looks slightly favourite in this one.
