Pena was born in the Spanish cities of Salamanca and León. He is presently the head coach of FC Goa in the Indian Super League.

Career
He went on to establish himself as a professional with Albacete Balompié in the Segunda División, participating in 106 official appearances over three seasons. He was a failed FC Barcelona youth graduate (he only played with the club’s C and B teams for five years).
Pea remained at that level for the 2009–10 season after signing a four-year contract with Recreativo de Huelva. He remained first choice at his new club but moved to Real Valladolid, which had just been relegated from La Liga, after only one season.
In his second season, Pea appeared in 35 games and scored one goal, assisting the Pucelanos in their comeback to the top level after a two-year absence. On August 27, 2012, he made his competitive debut, coming on as a late substitution in a 2–0 home win over Levante UD.
On May 11, 2014, Pea scored his first goal in the top flight, but he also placed one in his own net in a 4–3 away loss to Real Betis and Valladolid was relegated. He signed a two-year contract with Real Oviedo, who had just been promoted to the second tier, on June 25, 2015.
After parting ways with the Asturians on December 23, 2016, Pea, 33, joined fellow league club Getafe CF until June 2018. He transferred to Lorca FC, also in division two, on July 19, the following year.
Pea moved abroad for the first time in his career on July 29, 2018, when he joined FC Goa of the Indian Super League. He announced his retirement in April 2020.

Meet FC Goa’s New Head Coach
Carlos Pena has been named the new head coach of FC Goa, the club announced. The 38-year-old returned to the franchise two years after wrapping up a trophy-laden career with the team.
Juan Ferrando had left FC Goa midway through the season when ATK Mohun Bagan activated his release clause and signed him as their new manager and Derrick Pereira served as their interim coach since then, under whom they finished 9th in the 2021-22 season. The club is yet to dwell into his salary and cotnract details.
