Prediction
Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta created an all-Spanish quarterfinal battle on Friday at the 2022 Swiss Indoors.
After overcoming Jack Draper in three sets, Alcaraz went on to face Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. The teenager had a break point early in the first set but was unable to capitalise on it. He was given another opportunity in the seventh game, and this time he didn’t miss, putting him 4-3 ahead. The young Spaniard quickly won the set. Van de Zandschulp started the second set strong with a 2-0 advantage. Alcaraz then increased the stakes and won six consecutive games to win the match 6-4, 6-2. He is currently in his 11th quarterfinal of the season and has an 8-2 record.
On the other hand, Sebastian Baez advanced to a game with Dominic Stricker in the second round after being easily defeated by Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 6-1. In the opening set, both players served consistently, thus a tiebreaker seemed likely. Nevertheless, the Spaniard broke his rival’s serve in the 12th game to take the set. In the second set, Stricker took the initiative and quickly built a 3-1 lead, but Carreno Busta managed to rebound and tie the score on serve.
When the match reached its second session, the Swiss eventually defeated his rival in the tie-break to win the set. Carreno Busta had three break points at the start of the third set, preventing him from immediately going behind. The Spaniard was able to secure his own service break and grab a 3-2 advantage, but Stricker lost the opportunity. The fifth seed kept the upper hand and won 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4. He has already made it to the tournament’s final eight seven times this season.
Stricker put Carreno Busta to the test. He hit only 33 balls in the hole for victories while committing 14 unforced errors. He hadn’t won back-to-back matches since the US Open until that point. Alcaraz’s consistency and form have well outperformed Carreno Busta’s over the entire year. Though he could encounter some obstacles, the young Spaniard should eventually be able to outwit his adversary.
