The head-to-head score is Alcaraz 2-1 Cilic. At the Western & Southern Open a few weeks back, the Spaniard triumphed in their most recent match in straight sets.
Prediction
The teen’s third-round opponent was local favourite Jenson Brooksby.
In the opening set, Alcaraz prevailed with just one serve break. The second set was off to a quick break for the Spaniard, who went up 2-0, but Brooksby was able to tie it up. In the fifth game, the teenager took a 3-2 lead by breaking the American’s serve once more. In order to win the set, he broke his rival’s serve in the last game.
In the third set, Brooksby surged out to a 3-0 lead, showing hints of a comeback. In order to win the match 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 and go to the fourth round for a second consecutive year, Alcaraz then rattled off six games in a row.
Meanwhile, Cilic improved in the third set, twice breaking his rival’s serve to win it. In the fourth set, neither man faltered on serve, but Cilic broke his opponent Dan Evans’ serve in the final game to win the match 7-6(11), 6-7(3), 6-2, and 7-5.
Alcaraz is possibly the most captivating teenager on the ATP tour. With a win/loss record of 47-9 and a 17-4 record on hard courts, the Spaniard has been among the most powerful players in 2022. Alcaraz also triumphed in this year’s Rio, Miami, Barcelona, Madrid, and other competitions.
Marin Cilic, on the other hand, has had a decent year thus far, posting a win-loss record of 27-15, including 15 victories and 9 defeats on hard courts. Cilic hasn’t won a trophy yet this year, despite winning over two thirds of his matches.
Cilic must match the aggressiveness of the young Spaniard or risk falling behind. The former US Open champion still poses a serious threat, but Alcaraz ought to be able to overcome it.
