Sinner currently holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage against Alcaraz after three previous meetings.

Prior to Sinner sending the Spaniard out at Wimbledon earlier this year, Alcaraz had won their first match at the 2021 Paris Masters. The following time they faced off on Umag’s clay courts, Sinner once more prevailed to claim the championship.

Prediction

Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked fourth in the world, has maintained his goal of winning the top spot and will now face Italian Jannik Sinner in the 2022 US Open quarterfinal.

Alcaraz took five sets to defeat former champion Marin Cilic and secure a spot in the US Open quarterfinals in a contest. This gave him a spot in the last eight for the second time in a row, and it also maintained his chance of becoming the top player in the world.

In a match that lasted almost four hours, Alcaraz recovered from being broken in the fifth set to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Sinner needed a decider and to come back from a break down in the final set to defeat Ilya Ivashka, following a similar script to the Alcaraz-Cilic match. In the second set of what appeared to be an easy victory for Sinner after starting off as a huge favourite, but seven double-faults in the set allowed Ivashka to tie the match back up. It looked like Sinner would finish the victory in a matter of time when he rallied back to win the third set and after he broke back to tie the match in the fourth.

Ivashka, on the other hand, applied pressure to Sinner’s serve, breaking it three times in a row to not only tie the match but also advance 3-1 in the final set. Sinner advanced to the next round thanks to his consistent play, which ultimately outweighed his 55 unforced mistakes.

Sinner had trouble with his serving in the fourth round, but he still persevered and won. Sinner had a rare bad day, and we can anticipate him to perform much better than this.

Sinner is predicted to win at least a set, even if Alcaraz should still succeed.
