2022 Candidates Chess Tournament Round 14 Results, Final Standings, And World Championship Match Details
GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, who had already won the 2022 Candidates Tournament with one round remaining, drew his final match against GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda to complete an unbeaten season. He finished with a 2902 performance rating and a record 9.5/14 score. GM Ding Liren came in second after defeating GM Hikaru Nakamura on Monday. GM Teimour Radjabov finished third after defeating GM Richard Rapport, while GM Alireza Firouzja triumphed over GM Fabiano Caruana in the final round.
Nepomniachtchi has qualified to play GM Magnus Carlsen in the 2023 World Championship, but if Carlsen decides to give up the championship, Ding will take his place. By the way, Ding thinks that Carlsen will ultimately continue to defend his crown the next year. After the world champion met with FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and Director-General Emil Sutovsky on Sunday, it may have grown more likely. The format of the match was discussed among the three, and Carlsen was graciously invited to make his decision by International Chess Day on 20th July.
