2022 Candidates Chess Tournament Round 11 Results, Latest Standings, Nepomniachtchi’s Dominance, And Significance of Second Place

After defeating GM Alireza Firouzja on Thursday using the black pieces, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi is now one step away from winning the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The French-Iranian grandmaster, who had spent seven hours in the middle of the night playing online bullet chess, was overconfident and gave little opposition.

As a result of his third consecutive victory over GM Fabiano Caruana, who fell to fourth place, GM Ding Liren is now in exclusive possession of second place. A draw was also achieved in the game between GM Teimour Radjabov and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, despite the best efforts of GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Richard Rapport.

The battle for second place has continued to have potential relevance while Carlsen stays mum on the subject of defending or not defending his world title. Ding, who is currently 0.5 points ahead of Nakamura, has the best prospects to occupy that position. We might even need a tiebreaker to determine who takes first place if he wins his last three matches as well and the tournament leader finishes with three draws.
