From a Canadian sports marketing perspective and according to research from the team at Online Casino List, the two NHL players with the most hidden potential are Auston Matthews and PK Subban with a direct relation between talent and salaries
Data from Instagram shows the social marketing potential behind players and teams. Additional research shows that higher salaries give teams a much higher chance of topping their division.
To get to their findings, the team at Online Casino List compiled data using Upfluence, an Instagram tool that reveals the demographics behind someone’s followers. Analyzing the demographics and engagement rate of fans revealed the hidden potential of unexpected players.
NHL Research Unearths Corelation Between Success, Salaries And Potential
Additionally, the data revealed some other interesting findings:
- The team with the most international audience is the Edmonton Oilers.
- The Carolina Hurricanes are the only NHL team with more female than male followers which is one of the reasons they have an incredibly high engagement rate.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins have a follower base that almost equals the city’s population, but they also have the lowest engagement rate in our sample.
- The Chicago Blackhawks have an older audience than any other team (7% of Instagram fans are over 55, compared to the average of 2%.
The analysis looked at the number of engaged followers for the Instagram accounts of both players and NHL teams to draw some of these conclusions.
Correlation between salaries and standings
Another analysis compared a team’s salary spending with their ranking. Teams that spend more end up towards the top of the table. The Metropolitan Division is the best example: the top spender is indeed leading the table, while the team with the lowest average player salary is second-to-last.
Tom Harteveld of Online Casino List adds, “You can see a clear correlation between salaries and current standings. Something you might expect, but we see that money doesn’t always translate to success – take PSG in the Champions League. In the NHL, more money means a better position most of the time.’’
