BWF World Championships 2021 Update And News: Kento Momota Withdraws Owing To Back Injury

Japan’s Kento Momota has pulled out of the impending BWF World Championships 2021 in the latest badminton injury update

With the BWF World Championships in Spain starting from Sunday set to be the final badminton tournament of this year, the event was a much awaited one. However, even before the first clash of the marquee competition takes place, the event has been thrown in disarray with a raft of withdrawals.

Defending champion Kento Momota of Japan who has won the tournament twice has pulled out of the BWF World Championships 2021 owing to his back injury, one which also saw him miss out on last week’s HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021.

“BWF can confirm the unfortunate news that world No.2 and men’s singles defending champion Kento Momota has pulled out with injury. Momota also withdrew from last week’s HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021 with a back issue and has returned to Japan,” BWF said.

The Indonesia badminton team has meanwhile also withdrawn from the impending showdown in lieu of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant. The side has also urged Indonesia to clampdown its activity in a bid to refrain the new variant from wrecking havoc after withdrawing from the badminton event owing to a rise in cases in Europe.

The withdrawal of the Indonesia side will see Kevin Sanjaya-Marcus Fernaldi, Mohammad Ahsan Hendra Setiawan and Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto, Anthony Ginting, Jonatan Christie, Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu all be out of action.

“The Indonesian badminton team has withdrawn from participating in the 2021 BWF World Championship which will take place in Huelva, Spain, on 12-19 December 2021. With this decision, the Indonesian team will immediately prepare for the tournament in 2022,” Badminton Indonesia said.
