Viktor Axelsen, the reigning badminton world number one and winner of the 2023 World Tour Finals, kicked off the 2024 BWF World Tour with a strong win at the BWF Malaysia Open. He defeated Singapore’s 2021 world champion, Loh Kean Yew, in straight games, scoring 21-13 and 21-15 in just 43 minutes. Despite Loh’s effort in the second game, Axelsen secured his spot in the second round. Next up, he faces Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong China.

Malaysian player Lee Zii Jia suffered a defeat against China’s Lu Guangzu in a three-game battle, losing 16-21, 21-19, 21-15 within 77 minutes. Lee has faced challenges in Malaysian tournaments, falling short of reaching the final for nine consecutive times in events like Malaysia Open and Malaysia Masters. In the women’s singles, top-seed An Se-young claimed a decisive win against Denmark’s Line Kjærsfeldt, securing a 21-16, 21-10 victory in a swift 31-minute match.

Tuesday marks the start of HS Prannoy’s quest for the 2024 Malaysia Open title in a men’s singles match against Danish player Anders Antonsen. At the same time, Satwik and Chirag, the Indian men’s doubles pair, will launch their campaign against Indonesian duo M S Fikri and B Maulana. The Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur hosts the event from January 9 to 14, 2024.
