Career Highlights of BWF Women’s Singles Top 10 Players
1) Tai Tzu-ying
Tai Tzu-ying is a badminton player from Taiwan. She reached world No. 1 in the women’s singles at the age of 22 in December 2016, and she is the women’s singles player with the longest reign in BWF history, with more than 200 weeks. Tai was a silver medallist in the women’s singles event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as well as a gold medalist at the 2017 Summer Universiade and the 2018 Asian Games.
2) Akane Yamaguchi
Akane Yamaguchi is the reigning World Champion in badminton, having won gold in the women’s singles event at the 2021 BWF World Championships. In 2012, she was a member of the winning Japanese team in the Asian Junior Championships, and she went on to win other women’s singles titles after that. In 2013, and 2014, she won the World Junior Championships, the Asian Junior Championships, and the Asian Championships.
3) Chen Yufei
Chen Yufei is a badminton player from China. She is the current Olympic gold medalist. At the 2016 Asian and World Junior Championships, she won the girls’ singles junior crowns. Chen won her first senior championship at the Macau Open the same year. On December 17, 2019, she climbed to the top of the BWF World Rankings for the first time in her career, becoming world number one.
4) An Se-young
Korean player An Seyoung reached 2022 All-England open, where she lost to eventual winner Akane Yamaguchi. Later in April 2022, An Seyoung won Korea Open by beating Pornpawee Chochuwong in straight sets with a score of 21-17, 21-18. In 2019, she won the Super 300 New Zealand Open on the BWF World Tour, defeating 2012 Olympic gold medallist Li Xuerui of China in the final.
5) Nozomi Okuhara
Nozomi Okuhara is a badminton player from Japan. She is a former World No. 1 in the BWF women’s singles rankings and is recognised for her speed, agility, and endurance. She finished third in the 2016 Summer Olympics and first in the 2017 World Championships.
6) Carolina Marin
Carolina Marin is a professional badminton player from Spain. She is an Olympic gold medalist, three-time World Champion, five-time European Champion, and former World No. 1 in the BWF women’s singles rankings. She has won the World Championships in the women’s singles three times, in 2014, 2015, and 2018, making her the first female badminton athlete to do so. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she won the gold medal in women’s singles.
7) PV Sindhu
PV Sindhu won the Syed Modi International for the second time in 2022, defeating Malvika Bansod, a compatriot, in the final. She went on to win the 2022 Swiss Open, defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in two straight games in the final. Sindhu has won medals at the Olympics and on the BWF circuit, including gold at the 2019 World Championships.
8) Ratchanok Intanon
Ratchanok Intanon is a Thai badminton player who holds the record for being the first Thai woman to reach the top of the women’s singles rankings. She is known forย her relaxed hitting motion and nimble footwork.ย In 2013, she won the world title in women’s singles.
9) He Bingjao
In 2022, He Bingjao won two BWF Super 300 Series titles by beating Chen Yufei in the final on both occasions. He Bingjao won the women’s singles title at German Open and Korea Masters in 2022 so far.
10) Pornpawee Chochuwong
Pornpawee Chochuwong is a badminton player from Thailand. She was a silver medalist in the girls’ singles event at the 2015 Asian and 2016 World Junior Championships. She was also a member of the Thai winning teams at the Southeast Asian Games in 2017 and 2019. Chochuwong earned her maiden World Tour championship after defeating reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marn in the final of the 2020 Spain Masters.
