Career Highlights of BWF Men’s Singles Top 10 Players
1) Viktor Axelson
On the BWF World Ranking, Axelsen began the 2022 season as the world’s number one. On November 30, 2021, he became the world’s number one. He advanced to the semi-finals of the German Open 2022, where he was defeated by Indian player Lakshya Sen in three games (13-21, 21-12, 20-22). Axelsen won the All England Open on March 20 in decisive fashion, dropping only one game throughout the event. In the finals, he defeated Lakshya Sen. (21-10, 21-15).
2) Kento Momota
Kento Momota is a badminton player from Japan. On the court, he is noted for his brilliant and relentless play. He has won a number of important badminton competitions, including two World Championships, two Asian Championships, and one All England Championship. For his exploits in winning 11 badminton men’s singles titles in a season, Momota was included into the Guinness Book of World Records for “the most badminton men’s singles titles in a season.”
3) Anders Antonsen
Anders Antonsen is a badminton player from Denmark. He won the gold medal in the boys singles event at the 2015 European Junior Championships and was named European Young Player of the Year in the same year. He won the European Men’s Team Championships in 2016 and 2018 with the national team, as well as the European Mixed Team Championships in 2017, 2019, and 2021. Antonsen won gold at the 2019 Minsk European Games and the 2021 European Championships, as well as silver at the 2017 European Championships and 2019 World Championships.
4) Chou Tien-chen
At the 2014 French Open, Taiwanese badminton player Chou Tien-chen won his first BWF Super Series title, defeating Wang Zhengming of China 10–21, 25–23, 21–19 in the finals. From 2012 to 2014, he held the record for three consecutive Bitburger Open Grand Prix Gold championships.
5) Anthony Sinisuka Ginting
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is a badminton player from Indonesia. He first gained notoriety after winning a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games. He earned bronze in the men’s singles event at the 2020 Olympics. After winning bronze in 2014, he became the first Youth Olympic badminton medalist to win a medal at the Olympics. Ginting was a member of the victorious Indonesian team at the 2020 Thomas Cup.
6) Chen Long
Chen Long is a professional badminton player from China. He is the 2016 Olympic winner, as well as a two-time World and Asian champion. Chen was a former World No. 1 who held the top spot in men’s singles for 76 weeks between December 2014 and June 2016. In 2007, he began his international career by winning the boys’ singles title in the Asian and World Junior Championships, and in 2009, he won his first professional tournament, the Philippines Open. Chen competed in the Chinese National Championships in September 2021, announcing that it would be his last.
7) Lee Zii Jia
Lee Zii Jia is a badminton player from Malaysia. At the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, he earned the men’s singles gold medal, and at the 2021 All England Open, he won his first BWF Super 1000 title.
8) Jonatan Christie
Leonardus Jonatan Christie is an Indonesian badminton player who is a member of the Tangkas Specs club and specialises in singles. At the 2017 Southeast Asian Games and the 2018 Asian Games, he won the men’s singles title. Christie was a member of the victorious Indonesian team in the 2020 Thomas Cup.
9) Lakshya Sen
Lakshya Sen won his maiden Super 500 championship in January, defeating incumbent world champion Loh Kean Yew in the India Open final. He beat Loh in two games in a row, 24–22 and 21–17.
Lakshya defeated World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in the semifinals of the German Open, but lost in the finals to Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Later, he advanced to the finals of the 2022 All England Open by defeating World No. 3 Anders Antonsen and World No. 7 Lee Zii Jia. However, Viktor Axelsen defeated him in the finals 10-21, 15-21. He later withdrew from the Swiss Open due to exhaustion from playing two BWF tournament finals in a row.
10) Loh Kean Yew
Loh began the season by losing in consecutive games to Lakshya Sen in the final of the India Open, with scores of 22-24, 17-21. In February, he and the Singapore men’s team earned a historic bronze in the Badminton Asia Team Championships, the first in the country’s history, securing a spot in the Thomas Cup in May. Loh then lost in the first rounds of both the German and All England Opens, losing in three games to Brian Yang and Anders Antonsen, respectively.
