In a 47-minute match on court one, Nehwal defeated Spain’s Clara Azurmendi 21-15, 17-21, 21-14. PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, defeated Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games, 21-8, 21-7, to advance to the second round.
