World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen defeated Lakshya Sen in the men’s singles final of the All England Open Badminton Championship in Birmingham on Sunday, 21-10, 21-15. Sen was defeated by Axelsen in a 53-minute match. Axelsen dominated Sen from the start, and it was a one-sided contest.
Axelsen had won the first six points in the first game before Sen tried to close the gap. However, the Olympic gold medalist was far too precise with his shot selection, as he easily won the first game. Sen looked slightly better in the second game, but Axelsen maintained his cool to win the game and the match.
Record Set By Lakshya Sen
He was only the fifth Indian to reach the final of the prestigious tournament, following Prakash Nath (1947), Prakash Padukone (1980, 1981), Pullela Gopichand (2001), and Saina Nehwal (2015). Lakshya, 20, had won a thrilling 21-13, 12-21, 21-19 victory over the reigning champion to earn a spot in the finals. The only two Indians to have won the prestigious event are Prakash Padukone (1980) and Pullela Gopichand (2001). Lakshya’s victory over Lee was an example of his astute tactics, as he recovered from a mid-game slump to write tournament history. Lee saved one match point before Lakshya won.
