The Bungie Latinx Controversy refers to a post made by American game company Bungie. on X / Twitter. According to reports, the famous gaming company best known for creating Halo and Destiny uploaded the post in October 2, 2023. The popular game developers used the controversial term ‘Latinx’ while speaking about Bungie’s inclusiveness of Hispanic language and culture.
However, Latino fans quickly responded with heavy backlash and memes to mock the company’s use of the term. Given below is the full post:

The post also came with a flag of a brown raised fist holding a lightning bolt. The post managed to gain over 12 million views in a span of just 18 hours.
Online reactions from netizens
Unsurprisingly, the post has created a lot of controversy within the Latino community. Many member of the community did not acknowledge the term “Latinx” and considered it as disrespectful of their language. This is because they already have clearly defined words “Latino” and “Latina,” as well as rules well-established rules about the usage of letters to end words.
As Bungie post garnered more attention and a heavy amount of online backlash, Bungie started hiding some of the comments and replies. This led to additional callouts stating their hypocritical actions.
One X user @NECR0NOMIC0N_FS[2] posted:
Not a lot of you guys know this, but I’m Latina… and I really, REALLY don’t like the term “latinx”. The Spanish language has always, ALWAYS used -o and -a for suffixes, anything else is just grammatically wrong. And Bungie muting comments from Latin people is so hypocritical.”
Another X user named @DestinyBulletn posted a screenshot of the Bungie tweet and stated:
Not even descendants of Latino migrants in the USA like “LatinX” or “LatinE” “Latin People” or “Latin person” would be correct. “LatinX” and “LatinE” are suggestions by people who don’t understand latin languages or foreign culture.”
The user further explained how people should not use the term Latino and Hispanic interchangeably. This is because their meanings describe qualities of two very different populations that overlap sometimes but not always. Moreover, most of the Latino population don’t identify with the term Latinx.
