The Memorial Van Damme Brussels Diamond League 2023 will be Annu Rani’s first Diamond League matchup of the current campaign. The Indian javelin thrower, 31, has only participated in one Diamond League competition, the Lausanne leg in 2019. She came in seventh place, which was disappointing.
Currently ranked 43rd in the world, Annu Rani holds the women’s javelin throw national record for India with a distance of 63.24 metres. Rani’s season best is 59.24m and her personal best is 63.82m, both of which she attained in 2022.
Annu Rani will have her hands full in this competition because she’ll be up against world-class athletes like Victoria Hudson of Austria and Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan, the current fifth ranked player.
Additionally, Annu Rani has recently had form issues. The former medalist from the Asian Games hasn’t progressed past the 60-meter barrier in any of the competitions she’s entered since taking home the bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in August of last year.
In her most recent competition, Annu Rani placed seventh with a throw of 52.54 metres in a rainy international meet in Thum, Germany, earlier this month. Annu Rani will have the chance to find some form in the Brussels meet before the Asian Games 2023, which are set to start in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, later this month.
The Diamond League finals in Eugene, Oregon, on September 16 and 17, are the last competition of the 2023 season before the Brussels leg.
