University of Maryland men’s basketball assistant coach Bruce Shingler faced a suspension of 30 days, as announced by the school on Wednesday night post an October arrest on the charges of procuring a prostitute.

Currently the assistant coach of University of Maryland men’s basketball team, Shingler is a former high school teacher and a basketball coach. Shingler moved into his fifth season on staff with the Gamecocks in the 2020-21 campaign after he was hired back in May, 2016.

The 40 year old is married to his wife, Lauren and the two have a son, Giovonni and two daughters, Brooklyn and Savannah.

Before he moved to Carolina, Shingler recently served as an assistant coach at Towson from 2012-16. In addition to that, he has also coached at Morgan State and even worked with Frank Martin at Kansas State as an administrative assistant.

Shingler had joined the Gamecocks before the 2016-17 campaign, which was a season to remember, probably the best in school history as in that very season, the Gamecocks set a school record with 26 wins and managed to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the very first time since 2004.

Post serving a three-year starter and Academic All-American point guard at St. Augustine’s College from 2001-05, Shingler shifted to coaching and was able to find quick success at the high school, AAU and collegiate levels. The former high school teacher spent a total of four seasons as an assistant at Towson where he guided and helped the Tigers in setting the NCAA Division I record for the largest-single season turnaround, going from just one single win in 2011-12 to 18 in 2012-13.

As for his second season (2013-14), Shingler was a key factor behind the Tigers being able to record 25 wins, their most at the Division I level, ultimately advancing to the Quarter-finals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In the 2015-16, the Tigers again reached the postseason, as they won a total of 20 times and even went on to participate in the Inaugural Vegas 16 postseason event.

Before he started coaching at the collegiate level, Shingler was leader of the Bladensburg (Md.) High School boy’s team, guiding them to an 18-5 record in his lone season, after which he made a leap to the college ranks.

Not just this, he also coached AAU for the DC Assault 17U team, having sent 40 members to Division I institutions during his tenure, including McDonald’s All-Americans Michael Beasley (Kansas State), who is now playing with the New York Knicks in the NBA, along with Wally Judge (Kansas State /Rutgers) and Quinn Cook (Duke who is at the moment on a two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors.

Shingler Prostitution Charges, News, Arrest, Trial

As per court records, Shingler is due to appear in the Maryland District Court for his trial on February 28th. The incident date listed for the charges filed against him is October 14th, 2021.
