Gavin Creel, a beloved Broadway actor, passed away following a brief fight with an aggressive type of cancer at the age of 48.

The Tony Award winner Gavin Creel was well-known for his performances in the theatrical musicals Hello, Dolly! in New York and London. Media was informed on Monday by Creel’s partner, Alex Temple Ward, that the actor received a July diagnosis of an aggressive and uncommon form of sarcoma, metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, which Creel learned he had in July.

According to Ward, Gavin Creel received care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital before receiving hospice care at home.

On April 18, 1976, Gavin Creel was born in Findlay, Ohio. Having grown up in an intensely religious household, he found it extremely alienating and turned to theatre as a means of escaping it. He graduated from Findlay High School in 1994. In 1998, he graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre.

His grandmother was a music teacher and Creel was also a high school swimmer. He is survived by his parents, Nancy Clemens Creel and James William Creel; and his sisters, Heather Elise Creel and Allyson Jo Creel.

In 2009, Creel dated fellow actor Jonathan Groff and at the time of his death, he was in a relationship with actor, single and social media manager Alex Temple Ward with the two living together in Manhattan.

Before starring as Claude in the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair, which received Tony Award nominations for both productions, Gavin Creel made his Broadway debut in 2002 in the title role of Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

He played the part of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon from 2012 to 2015; he was honoured with a Laurence Olivier Award for creating the role in the West End production and went on to play it on Broadway and in the U.S. National Tour. He was honoured with a Tony Award in 2017 for his portrayal of Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!.

Other stage credits for Creel include national tours of Fame (1998) and Into the Woods (2023), as well as Broadway productions of Mary Poppins (2006) and Waitress (2020) and La Cage aux Folles (2004), She Loves Me (2016), and Into the Woods (2022). His most well-known on-screen character is Bill from Eloise at the Plaza and its Christmas-themed sequel. He is mostly a stage actor.
