British Tennis player Johanna Konta has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon 2021 after some unfortunate set of events. Johanna Konta has emerged as a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case. The All England Club announced the news a few hours before the start of the third grand slam of the year.

Johanna Konta was scheduled to face Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in her opening match of the 2021 Wimbledon. Instead, the 123rd ranked China’s Wang Yafan will take her place in the event. Konta had reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2017 and lost to Venus Williams in straight sets.

Johanna Konta to spend ten days in self isolation Owing To COVID Norms

The statement from All England Club revealed that after being recognized as a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case, Johanna Konta would not participate in Wimbledon 2021. As a result, the 30-year old also has to spend ten days in self-quarantine.

“The Referee’s Office has advised that Johanna Konta has been withdrawn from the Ladies’ Singles Draw, having been classified as a close contact of a positive test for COVID-19. In line with government legislation, Konta is required to spend 10 days in self-isolation,” the statement from All England Club read.

With Wimbledon suffering cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the players are confined to a central London hotel ‘bubble’. None of the players are staying in their respective homes or rented accommodation.

Serbian star Novak Djokovic, who won the Roland Garros 2021, remains the frontrunner to defend his title successfully this year in the men’s category.
