Joey Barton was dismissed from his position as the head coach of the club while they were situated in the 16th position in League One, having managed only one victory out of their last five league matches.
He took over in February 2021 but was unable to prevent their relegation to League Two. However, he later orchestrated a remarkable promotion, securing their return to League One through goal difference after a resounding 7-0 triumph over Scunthorpe on the final day of the 2021-22 season.

Barton’s Contract
In July 2022, he extended his contract with Tranmere for three more years and guided the team to safety, finishing 17th in League One in the previous season. Nevertheless, he now finds himself without a job.
In a statement, Barton expressed his gratitude, saying, “Our journey as a club has been quite a remarkable one. I’m thankful to Wael for entrusting me with the leadership of the Gas Heads. My time in Bristol will always hold a special place in my heart.
“We created unforgettable memories on this journey, from achieving promotion to that unforgettable 7-0 victory. My family and I will forever cherish those moments.”
Barton Extended Thanks to Players
He also thanked the players for their contributions during his tenure and expressed his appreciation for the fans’ patience.
He acknowledged that he didn’t always make the right decisions but assured them that his intentions were always for the best. He wished everyone the best and recognized that the club was in a much stronger position than when he arrived.
Barton concluded, “Thanks for the memories, and I hope to see you all again soon. Goodnight Irene. JB”
