DeWanna Bonner hit a jump shot late in the fourth quarter, and Jones tried to crash the offensive glass. However, she quickly collapsed after planting her right foot. The damage mechanism and the immediate reactions of both her and her coworkers made it unfortunatelly evident what had happened as soon as she went for her right thigh.

She ruptured her Achilles tendon, as determined by diagnostic testing, and will now need to undergo a protracted healing process. Medical breakthroughs have made the injury less catastrophic than it formerly was, but it is still one of the worst a player can get.

Jones had become one of the league’s premier prominent player in recent years. In addition to being named an All-Star in each of the previous two seasons, she was hailed as the Most Improved Player in 2021 and the Sixth Woman of the Year in 2022. She continued her stellar play this summer, averaging 15.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while shooting 57.1% from the field.

The Sun, who are currently 11-3 and in second place in the league, will suffer a significant setback as a result of her absence. They have enough quality to get by throughout the regular season and will still easily make the playoffs, but without Jones, they will find it difficult to compete in the postseason with groups like the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty, especially in light of the strong frontcourts each of those teams has.
