Marcio Freire, a famous Brazilian big wave surfer, died on Thursday, October 22, 2020, while surfing the huge waves at Nazaré, Portugal, know his cause of death
He had turned 47.
Freire was one of three Brazilian surfers who were shown in the 2016 documentary “Mad Dogs,” which was about their attempt to ride the huge wave “Jaws” in Hawaii.

Portuguese news sources say that Freire paddled out on his own at Nazaré and caught a few waves. Freire was pulled back to the beach by fellow surfer Lucas Chumbo, but the lifeguards who were waiting for him couldn’t wake him up. The reason for death has not yet been found. But in a statement, the Municipality of Nazaré said that the sea wasn’t particularly dangerous when Freire died.

Marcio Freire was born in Brazil, and he is known as one of the best surfers in that country. He was one of the first people to try big wave surfing. Freire had lived in Hawaii for about 20 years, where he and his family and friends had built a strong surfing community. He was known for being bigger than life and loving the sport he played. He also helped teach younger surfers how to get better and gave them the confidence to take on the biggest waves in the world.
Surfing world is shocked
Fred Pompermayer, a sports photographer, wrote on Instagram that he was always smiling and had such a happy spirit. Nic von Rupp, another surfer, said, “He surfed all day with a big smile on his face. That’s how I’ll always remember him. Legend.”
The accident occurred while Freire was practising tow-in surfing, in which surfers employ mechanical assistance, such as a Jet Ski, to catch faster moving waves than they would be able to if paddling by hand.
Portugal’s National Maritime Authority stated in a statement that rescuers brought him back to shore where they discovered him in cardiac arrest and proclaimed him dead. Surfers throughout the world looked up to Freire as a pioneer for his pursuit of huge waves.

First to pay respect on social media was professional big-wave surfer Nic von Rupp. Who posted an Instagram story in Freire’s honour.
The Nazaré Canyon on the seafloor off the coast of Portugal is responsible for some of the world’s largest and most dangerous waves. Which may be found at the area where Freire died. In October of 2020, a German surfer named Sebastian Steudtner rode a wave. There have been many incidents there, but before Thursday, none of them had ended in death.
