Early on, Magsayo had the upper hand, landing powerful combinations that cut through Figueroa’s southpaw posture. However, Figueroa quickly jumped back on Magsayo, winning the battle when the two were in the clinch. In the second half of the bout, Figueroa’s pressure tactics started to pay dividends as Magsayo struggled to collect his breath and Figueroa picked away with close-range short punches. Magsayo’s attacking fireworks become less frequent as time went on, but Figueroa kept up his steady pace.
Even though Magsayo’s eighth-round eight-punch assault with hooks and a right hand was the biggest offensive display of the fight, Figueroa was never backed up by it. As the tenth round got underway, Magsayo seemed exhausted as Figueroa applied more pressure.
Magsayo dropped to the ground twice in the round without landing a blow, indicating he had almost no energy left. Magsayo entered the ring for the twelfth round, trading blows in hopes of landing a major blow to turn the match around, but that blow never materialized.
