Last month, Spa Water, Vabbing and many others blasted for cultural appropriation. And now, videos of viral ‘Boyfriend Haul’ trend are being accused of racism by black content creators.
What is the ‘Boyfriend Haul’ Trend?
The ‘Boyfriend Haul’ trend is a quite bizarre one. It involves women showcasing their boyfriends online as though they just bought them from somewhere.
Though the trend was started as a harmless and cute one but recently it sparks some serious concerns.
Many Black content creators believe that this trend is quite problematic and racist, when the boyfriend that has been ‘bought’ is black. These trendy videos have been compared to the slavery by some.
A TikToker named sunshinelively, posted a new viral video, where she watched 3 separate interracial couples that joined the controversial trend.
According to her, the first two couples were fine but the third one was, “using a trend to disguise racism” after the woman described her boyfriend as a “purebred Nigerian from the motherland”.
The TikToker says in her video that, “This is probably the last thing you’ll hear from me about the boyfriend haul because the people that get it, get it”.
She further added, “The ones that don’t, just don’t – and there’s nothing that I can do about that”.
Another TikTok user shared a video of himself reacting to different interracial couple who hopped in the trend.
The text over the video says, “Playing the vine boom at every moment they should have realized this sounded like a slave auction”.
Despite numerous arguments about the trend being problematic or racist, the ‘Boyfriend Haul’ trend is still ongoing.
Although, a few couples who were called out in the viral videos have now deleted their own videos from the platform.
