In March 2002, Lane, who was famous for saying “Let’s get it on” before fights, suffered a stroke that left him partially paralysed and unable to speak. His wife Kaye and children Terry and Tommy were by his side during his final days. He died on December 6th, 2022 after being in hospice care for the past few weeks.
The 85 year old had a net worth of $50 million.
Most of his time was spent watching videos of the roughly 50 fights he had overseen in the 1980s and 1990s, including the middleweight championship draw between Vito Antuofermo and Marvin Hagler in 1979. Famous Chinese boxers Zhang Zhilei and Fanlong Meng’s manager, Terry Lane, acknowledged that the 20 years following the stroke were exceedingly difficult.
However, the outpouring of support has relieved them. He was a really wonderful parent and husband, but he is unaware whether others ever saw his sensitive and gentle side. Since his stroke, his mother has taken care of his father. He exclaimed as he does not know if December 6 marks his father’s passing or the start of a new life for her.
More about his boxing career
Lane started boxing after enlisting in the Marines in 1956. Later, in the 1960 American Olympic trials in San Francisco, he lost. In his role as the third man in the ring, Lane was renowned for his no-nonsense attitude.
He switched to professional boxing the next year and lost his welterweight debut through a first-round TKO. After winning 10 straight games, Lane retired in 1967 with a 10-1 record (with six knockouts).
The legendary officiating career
He graduated from the University of Utah with a law degree in 1970, and the following year he oversaw his first championship match. Lane constantly seemed to be involved in important boxing exchanges. Lane, maybe the most best-known referee in the long history of boxing, officiated Tyson’s comeback DQ victory over Peter McNeeley as well as Julio Cesar Chavez’s triumph against Meldrick Taylor in the rematch.
