American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson is all set to run her first 200m of the 2023 season in the upcoming competition.

Winners in each individual event will receive a maximum of P65 000 while losers will bag a minimum of P4 000 in both men’s and women’s events this year.

The Botswana Golden Grand Prix will take place on April 29, at the National Stadium in Gaborone. Aside from Richardson, Olympic champion Andre De Grasse is one of the stars to watch in the men’s 200.

Botswana will host the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series event for the first time.

Richardson’s last women’s 200m race outside the U.S. Trials was at the NYC Grand Prix on June 12 last year. She won that race with a time of 22.47 seconds. Throughout her career, the 23-year-old’s fastest recorded time for 200m is 22.00 seconds during a 2020 meet in Monteverde, Florida.

Richardson will line up alongside various key compatriots in the upcoming competition. This includes World Championships bronze medallists (4x100m) Kiara Parker and Dezerea Bryant, 2019 NCAA indoor 200m champion Kayla White.

Alongside those names is African Games 200m champion Gina Bass from the Gambia. Bass recently just won double sprints at the Grand Prix International de Doula. South Africa’s latest generational sprinting talent Viwe Jingqi will also feature in the starting line alongside local pair Lydia Jele and Winnie Sarefo.

In the men’s 100m competition, five men with the best sub-10-second records will compete against each other including world silver medallist Marvin Bracy and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala. Omanyala is the current African record champion at 9.77, and also the reigning African and Commonwealth 100m titleholder.

Kenny Bednarek, the World and Olympic 200m silver medallist will also compete alongside Canada’s world 4x100m champion Aaron Brown. Other stars include Liberian record-holder Emmanuel Matadi, and Benji Richardson, the South African triple world U20 medallist.
