Hull’s slapshot echoed throughout the hockey world when he left the Chicago Blackhawks in 1972 to play for the Winnipeg Jets in the embryonic World Hockey Association. The 1961 Stanley Cup winner, two-time NHL MVP, and record-setting goal scorer lent instant credibility to the World Hockey Association.

By the end of his third season (1959–60), he had won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s scoring champion; he would go on to repeat this feat in 1961–62 and 1965–66. The 1961 Stanley Cup triumph was Chicago’s third overall and first in 23 years under his leadership. On three further occasions, he finished in second place in terms of total points.
On March 12, 1966, the Golden Jet became the first NHL player to score more than 50 goals in a season, surpassing his previous record of 50 goals and the records of Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion. The crowd at Chicago Stadium stood for seven minutes to applaud his 51st goal, which he scored against Cesare Maniago of the New York Rangers. Upon the season’s conclusion, Hull had scored 54 goals, the most by any team in a single season during the Original Six era. That same year, Hull scored 97 points, breaking Dickie Moore’s record of 96 set seven years earlier.

After Bobby was denied admittance to the 1972 Summit Series because he played in the WHA, Dennis considered skipping the competition to demonstrate his support for his brother. However, Bobby convinced Dennis to stay on Team Canada.
