His full name was Wilmer Cable Butler. He was born on April 7, 1921, in Cripple Creek, Colorado, U.S. Later, he was raised in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Bill Butler did his schooling at Mount Pleasant High School in 1940. Later, he attended the University of Iowa, where he received a degree in engineering.

He first married Alma H. Smith. They both have three daughters, and two of them are well-known actresses named Genevieve and Chelsea. Later, he married Iris Butler, with whom he had two daughters.

He died on April 5, 2023, in Los Angeles, California, U.S. At the time of his death, he was 101 years old.
