On Tuesday, December 13, the Big Bash League (BBL) will start its 12th season, know the 2022-23 rules, schedule and players list
The 2022-23 edition of the annual Australian T20 competition is exciting because there have been some big changes to the teams since the last one. There have also been some big-name overseas signings and the first-ever overseas draught.
South Africa gave up their ODI series against Australia, so some of the best international players, like David Warner (Thunder), Cameron Green (Scorchers), Nathan Lyon (Sixers), Marnus Labuschagne (Heat), Travis Head (Strikers), and Usman Khawaja (Strikers), will be able to play in their own T20 League for the first time in years (Heat).

The Test players will be able to play for their own teams, but a few big names in white-ball cricket will not be there. Mitchell Marsh was a big part of Perth Scorchers’ run to the title earlier this year, but he won’t be able to play because he had ankle surgery. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell also won’t be able to play because he got hurt at a birthday party. This season, Adam Zampa, who spins with his legs, will lead the Melbourne Stars instead.
The Scorchers will also miss the services of dynamic opener Phil Salt, who hurt his shoulder during the Australian ODI series last month. Faf du Plessis, one of the top overseas signings, will play for the Scorchers for the first seven games before leaving for the first SA20 League. Du Plessis’s teammate on The Hundred, Adam Lyth, will join him in the Scorchers’ squad, taking Salt’s place.
Andre Russell and Martin Guptill have been hired by Melbourne Renegades to take the place of Liam Livingstone. Jimmy Neesham and Zak Crawley have been picked by the Hobart Hurricanes as short-term replacements. Fazalhaq Farooqi, an Afghan pacer, has replaced David Willey with the Sydney Thunder.
What About The Rules?
Before the 2020-21 season, BBL added three new rules: the Power Surge, the X-Factor, and the Bash Boost. The league got rid of the X-Factor and Bash Boost, but the Power Surge is still in place. In this mode, the team that is batting gets a four-over powerplay at the start and can take two overs of field restrictions in any over after the first 10.
This is the first time that DRS will be used in the BBL, and each team will get one review per innings.
The over-rate rule, which was put in place by the ICC earlier this year, has also been put into place in the BBL. A team must bowl its 20 overs in 79 minutes (nonstop), and if it doesn’t, it will have one less fielder outside the 30-yard circle for the rest of the innings.
