Berlin Marathon 2022 Results, Men’s And Women’s Winners List, Updates And Winner Prize Money

Double Olympic champion and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge broke his own world record by a massive 30 seconds at the 2022 Berlin Marathon on Sunday 25 September, know the prize money

The race was Kipchoge’s fifth Berlin marathon, finishing with a record time of 2:01:09 shattering the previous record.

Kipchoge won Sunday’ race over Kenyan Mark Korir (2:05:58), by nearly five minutes, and earned the equivalent of about $106,000 in prize money and bonuses.

With this record, the Kenyan runner has twice set the official men’s world record in Berlin.

Eliud Kipchoge Breaks His Own World Record

The previous world record, which also belonged to Eliud Kipchoge was 2:01:39 set on the same course in 2018.

Eliud Kipchoge broke this record with a new record time of 2:01:09, exactly 30 seconds less than the previous record.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa won the women’s race on Sunday in a course record of 2:15:37. It is the third fastest time in history.

The 2022 Berlin Marathon As It Happened

Ethiopian pair Guye Adola and Andamlak Belihu, were the only runners running beside Kipchoge’s blistering pace until the 10km point. The men crossed the 10km point in 28:23, well within the world record target.

Adola, the 2021 winner however, soon fell off the pace set by Kipchoge’s preferred pacemaking duo of Moses Koech and Noah Kipkemboi as they approached the 14km point.

They reached the halfway mark in 59:51 well within their pre-race target of 60:50. It was also 96 seconds faster than when Kipchoge broke the world record in at the same course in 2018.

By the 25km point, it was down to Kipchoge and Belihu after dropping off the last pacer. At that point the 37-year-old Kenyan gradually pulled away from the Ethiopian.

With the last 15km to go things were all down to Kipchoge who broke an occasional smile, chasing his second world record in five years.

At the 35km mark, Kipchoge was one minute over his world record pace but slowed slightly after. However, things got better and with 2km to go he was nearly 36 seconds faster than his 2018 winning time.

As Kipchoge tackled the last kilometre his face lit up, delighted to have again defied human limits. The win was his 17th marathon win of 19 starts. He crossed the finish line for his fourth win in Berlin, with the official time clocked at 2 hours, 1 minute, and 9 seconds.

Kipchoge punched his fists in the air in rejoice before hugging coach Patrick Sang, as the world celebrated another remarkable feat by the greatest ever marathoner. This was also his second marathon win this year after winning the Tokyo Marathon in March.

Kipchoge is also the first human to run the distance in under two-hours, when he did so in specialist conditions for an unofficial event.
