Huybrechts entered his matchup with Van Gerwen as a significant underdog, but in a thrilling game, the World Matchplay winner was penalised for 20 missed doubles. In three of the first five legs, Huybrechts profited from Van Gerwen’s errors while also taking out 121 to take a 4-1 lead. With three straight legs, Van Gerwen came back to tie the score, but he missed tops in leg nine, allowing Huybrechts to regain the lead. The game went into a deciding leg as the Dutch star missed seven more darts at a double, and Huybrechts pounced by ending 134 with a treble 18 and two double tops to raise nearly 3,000 spectators in the Oktoberhallen to their feet.
Huybrechts will now compete against Adrian Lewis in the third round on Sunday, who averaged 103 in a dominant 6-1 victory over Boris Krcmar of Croatia. Despite the fact that Huybrechts won his home competition on Saturday, the other two Belgian aces, Dimitri Van den Bergh and Mike De Decker, had their chances of winning dashed in round two. The Belgian number one lost painfully to Andrew Gilding 6-5 after missing darts to break in legs five and seven.
World Champion Peter Wright was also eliminated after Dutchman Niels Zonneveld overcame a 4-2 deficit by defeating the Scot in the deciding leg with finishes of 100 and 126. Cross, who defeated De Decker 6-4, completed six doubles out of ten tries in Clemens’ next matchup. Martin Schindler, a fellow German who averaged 96 in his 6-2 victory over Czech Republic great Karel Sedlacek, joined Clemens in the round of 16 in Belgium.
The third round of Belgian Darts Open will be played in the afternoon session of Sunday, and the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be played in the evening session. For the event, tickets can be purchased by the fans from here.
