Another scandal emerges, and the BBC chooses to keep it under wraps.
On Sunday, the BBC suspended a male presenter and alerted the authorities to the fact that he had paid a teenager for photos over a period of three years.
The media business is scheduled to meet with the Met Police today to discuss the incident. It is the most recent in a string of scandals that have dogged the company in the more than ten years since the Jimmy Savile claims first surfaced.
BBC Presenter Supports A Crack Cocaine Addict
According to the mother of the victim, the presenter used the funds to support a crack cocaine addiction that destroyed the teen and the person’s family’s lives. The victim is not identified either.
However, the BBC has declined to identify the accused presenter, even as the gossip mill has started to spin at breakneck speed.
Why Won’t The BBC Reveal The Presenter It Has Suspended?
In not naming the presenter they have suspended, the BBC could be doing more damage than revealing their identity outright – as other presenters who are off sick, on annual leave, or not on air for any number of reasons today (10 July) and later in the week could be misidentified as the accused man.
Reporters Come Forward To Clear Their Names From Allegations
This has already happened at least once. As BBC Radio 5 Live host Nicky Campbell said today, he contacted police after being misidentified as the suspended presenter.
Among other broadcasters, Gary Lineker and Jeremy Vine felt obligated to make remarks denying the accusations.ย ย
It appears that the BBC is shielding a guy suspected of engaging in dubious activities, including allegedly paying a vulnerable kid ยฃ35,000 over the course of three years for images.
It’s likely that The Sun and the BBC are trying to prevent a defamation lawsuit if the accused individual hasn’t actually done what has been claimed. However, in the process, they are endangering the well-being and safety of other employees at the BBC.
