Know more about Barbie

In the lively and idealistic world of Barbie Land, Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives. But as soon as kids come out into the world, they discover the benefits and risks of living with other people. After a heavily teased 2001 spoof introduction, we shift to a pastel pink utopia where “all problems of feminism and equal rights have been solved, thanks to Barbie.” Here in Barbieland, big-haired dolls can have any profession (including lawyers, doctors, scientists, and presidents), hopefully motivating real-life women to strive for equal success.

Everyone here looks like Barbie in a surreal take on the nightmare that is Being John Malkovich. Everyone else is Ken except the men. Like Michael Cera’s unfortunate Allan. But mostly it’s just Ken, the missing limb. Margot Robbie, producer and star of the film, plays the “stereotypical Barbie” at the film’s center, a portrayal so perfect that it doesn’t matter when Helen Mirren, the film’s narrator, makes a cynical joke about the casting. When this normally upbeat person has sudden bouts of melancholy, panic, and even death, it comes as a shock to everyone around her. The two horsemen of the Barbie apocalypse, flat feet and (say it!) cellulite, appear.
