The visionary behind the Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Siddhar Peedam in Kancheepuram, where women were empowered to participate in temple rituals while dressed in distinctive red attire, peacefully departed on Thursday.

For half a century, he served as a preeminent spiritual guide, and under his leadership, Melmaruvathur evolved into a vibrant hub of religious activities, attracting countless devotees on a daily basis.
Cause of Death
Spiritual luminary 82 year old Bangaru Adigalar, affectionately known as ‘Amma,’ who revolutionized spirituality in Tamil Nadu by allowing women to enter the sanctum sanctorum of Shakti temples, breathed his last near Melmaruvathur on Thursday.
At the time of his passing, he was 82 years old and succumbed after chest pain at his residence in Melmaruvathur. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
The spiritual guru was unwell for sometime and was confined to his home and suffered a heart attack on Thursday evening.
Born on March 3 in 1941 at Melmaruvathur to Gopala Naicker and Meenakshi Ammal as their second child, Bangaru Adigalar was groomed to become a teacher and claimed to be a Poorna Avatar of Aadhiparasakthi, possessing all 16 qualities of the Goddess.
Adhiparasakthi Spiritual Movement
The Adhiparasakthi spiritual movement he founded is renowned for the Melmaruvathur temple and its affiliated worship groups across the state, boasting a substantial following.
A distinctive aspect of his spiritual service was his pioneering move to allow women into temple sanctums, even during menstruation, challenging prevailing taboos held by many. In recognition of his invaluable spiritual contributions to the nation, he was honored with the Padma Shri Award in 2019.
As his fame grew, prominent individuals became his devotees, leading him to establish engineering and medical colleges. The foundation stone for Adi Parasakthi Polytechnic was laid by the then Chief Minister, M.G. Ramachandran.
Melmaruvathur’s significance is underscored by the fact that all trains make a stop at Melmaruvathur junction.
Tributes Poured In
In a condolence message, Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi expressed deep sorrow at the passing of ‘Amma’ Bangaru Adigalar, describing him as a highly evolved soul and an exceptional spiritual teacher.
His contributions to education, healthcare, and social reforms will continue to inspire us. The Governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the spiritual leader’s family and followers.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also mourned the loss of Bangaru Adigalar and announced that state honors would be accorded at his funeral. He is scheduled to visit Melmaruvathur on Friday to pay his respects to this revered spiritual leader.
Early Life of Bangaru Adigalar
Born as G. Subramaniam, he initially worked as a schoolteacher in Sothupakkam, commuting by bicycle, before rising to prominence as Bangaru Adigalar and as the oracle of the Parasakthi temple, which operated from a small thatched cottage in Melmaruvathur since 1971.
He established the Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Siddhar Vaara Vazhipaatu Mandram, and nearly every village in Tamil Nadu has its branches. Devotees of the Peedam, men dressed in red dhotis and women in red sarees, formed a close-knit community.
