Back in 2023, Lionel Messi won his record ninth Ballon d’Or, with Erling Haaland coming in at a close second.

In previous editions, the organizers based the award on the performance of footballers throughout a calendar year. However, this year’s edition marks the second time that it will be based on the results of the season.
