Interestingly, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo did not make the shortlist this year, for the first time since the year 2003.
Ballon d’Or trophy dimensions
The Ballon d’Or trophy has a height of 31 cm and a diameter of 23 cm. It weighs just over 7 kilograms and it is made of two brass plates soldered together, creating the shape of a ball. Inside the trophy is a wax-like material while the outside has a gold layer.
Ballon d’Or trophy value
The Ballon d’Or trophy has an estimated value of around €3,000 ($2,920) considering the raw materials used in making it. However, awards like this are worth way more than its actual price of just the raw materials. The award can fetch a value of over €500,000 at present.
Changes in the Ballon d’Or trophy
Over the years, the men’s Ballon d’Or trophy has undergone some changes while the women’s version has remained the same. The Women’s Ballon d’Or, was introduced just about four years ago, and organizers have used the same version till date. Meanwhile, in the men’s case, the first trophy was awarded in 1956 to Blackpool and England legend Stanley Matthews.
Up until 1983, the trophy remained more or less the same until France and Juventus legend Michele Platini received it. It featured a new design and was larger in size as well. Aside from minor details, the present trophy has remained more or less the same from this version.
Ballon d’Or prize money
While there is no specific prize money for the winners of the Ballon d’Or, However, the recipients receive bonus cheques. This bonuses are set in their contracts with clubs and sponsors beforehand. Nike awarded Real Madrid legend Luka Modric with a prize money of €800,000 ($780,000) when he won in 2018. Last year, French forward Karim Benzema, received around €1m ($970,000) as per a contract clause with Real Madrid. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Lionel Messi received between $3.4 Million and $5.7 Million for his most recent trophy in 2021.
Ballon d’Or 2023 favourites
Ahead of the final announcements, the favorites to win the men’s award are Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Vinicius Junior, Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe and Rodri. Meanwhile, the favourites to win the women’s award include Barcelona and Spain star Bonmati, Sam Kerr, and Georgia Stanway are the favorites.
