PV Sindhu propelled the progress of Indian women by defeating Lo Sin Yan with a score of 21-7, 16-21, 21-12 in a thrilling match lasting 52 minutes. Meanwhile, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched a dominant win against Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam in the second doubles match, triumphing with a score of 21-10, 21-14. Ashmita Chaliha then sealed the deal with a convincing victory over Yeung Sum Yee, scoring 21-12, 21-13.
As a result of reaching semi-finals, Indian women’s team also secured direct entry into 2024 Uber Cup, scheduled for April-May in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China. In semi-finals, India’s women will confront Japan. Even if they lose, they will still secure bronze medal as losing semi-finalists receive this distinction at continental level.
Contrarily, men’s Indian badminton team exited in quarter-finals, succumbing to Japan. Lakshya Sen propelled India ahead by defeating Koki Watanabe 21-19, 22-20 in pivotal third match. However, tie was ultimately decided by clash between Kidambi Srikanth and Kento Momota. In gripping encounter, Momota, three-time badminton world champion, emerged victorious over Indian player with score of 21-17, 9-21, 20-22, securing win for Japan.
