He also owns the national records for the 3000m steeplechase and the half marathon. Not only that, but the race at the Sound Running Track Meet in San Juan Capistrano, California, was only his second competitive 5000m run. Sable ran 13.25.65 seconds, breaking Bahadur Prasad’s 1992 5000m record of 13:29.70 seconds.

What makes it so unique?

It’s an uncommon feat for an individual to have numerous national records in different sports. Sable’s favorite event, steeplechase, is essentially an obstacles race, whereas 5000m is a long-distance running discipline.

Sable made his 5000m debut only this year at the Federation Cup, finishing first and setting a new meet record of 13.39.43, which was significantly faster than G. Lakshmanan’s mark of 13:47.28 set in 2018.

Prior to the Federation Cup, Sable established the current national steeplechase record of 8.16.21 at the Indian Grand Prix 2 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Avinash Sable’s journey:

Sable, who is from the hamlet of Mandwa in Maharashtra’s Beed district, has become one of India’s top runners in the previous four years. Growing up in a farming household, Sable had no desire to become an athlete. He intended to join the Army after graduating high school, so he enlisted.

Sable was sent to the Mahar regiment’s 5th battalion and served and battled in the harsh surroundings of the Siachen glacier. Sable began to take an interest in athletics as a way to relax from the rigors of his military duties.

The decision proved to be a stroke of genius. Sable set a 37-year-old national record in the steeplechase in 2018 at the 58th Open National Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, clocking 8:29.88. He has broken his own national record seven times since then.

Sable has been working with Amrish Kumar and had previously worked with former national coach Nikolai Snesarev. An emotional Sable braved Snesarev’s death on the NIS Patiala campus in 2021, setting a new national record.

Sable achieved a national record of 8:18.12s in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He finished sixth in his heat and was unable to advance to the final.

National half marathon record:

Sable broke the old national mark of 1.03:46 in the 2020 Delhi half marathon by over three and a half minutes. It was only the third half marathon of his career at the time, and he had only prepared for it for a month. He just entered the tournament because he needed to practice for his Olympics preparation. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, there were few tournaments during that time period.

Early Life & Family:

Sable was born on September 13, 1994, into a farming family in Mandwa, Beed district, Maharashtra and is currently 27 years old. As there was no public transportation in his hamlet, he would run or walk the 6 km (3.7 mi) trip between home and school from the age of six. After finishing high school, he joined the Indian Army’s 5 Mahar regiment. Where he was stationed in the Siachen Glacier in 2013–2014, and the deserts of northwestern Rajasthan in 2015. And Sikkim in 2016.

At the request of his teammates, he first competed in inter-army cross country running in 2015, before moving to steeplechase under trainer Amrish Kumar. Sable, who was overweight, lost 20 kg (44 lb) in three months before entering the national camp. And was taught by Nikolai Snesarev.

He has a height of 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 56kg.
